Pianokosmos

  • Madison Square Park, just east of the South Plaza (map)

Open call to pianists of all ages and skill levels!

Envisioned by the Third Street Music School and presented in partnership with the Madison Square Park Conservancy, this participatory recital program will musically explore the “Kosmos” in the 20th and 21st centuries, including repertoire selections from:

  • Béla Bartók’s folk music inspired, six volume foundational masterwork, Mikrokosmos, designed to guide students from beginner to advanced piano techniques;

  • Vincent Ho’s The 12 Chinese Zodiac Animals, a collection of twelve short pieces for piano reflecting Chinese cultural themes, in which the distinct animal traits inspire expressive sounds, harmonies, and performance techniques;

  • Makrokosmos, American composer George Crumb's response to Bartok’s exploration of music via the stars and zodiac;

  • And “The People United Will Never Be Defeated,” Frederic Rzewski’s 36 variations on the Chilean protest song by composer Sergio Ortega that has been performed worldwide.
