Faced with the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, Make Music New York took decisive action to assist our dedicated community and the larger music scene in NYC. We adapted our e-newsletters and social media accounts to provide real-time updates and resources to the thousands of struggling artists in our network, played a leading role in tutoring performing arts centers large and small on how to take their programming into the great outdoors, and helped establish the “Bluegrass Musicians Fund,” which raised over $15,000 for musicians in dire financial need.
And we proudly persevered in our core mission by producing scaled-back live performances — not to mention hundreds of virtual ones — during our June 21st summer solstice festivities and the 10th Annual Make Music Winter on December 21, 2020.
2020 Program Highlights Included: a pared down Porch Stomp celebration held from dozens of porches, stoops and driveways across Brooklyn • Make Music Ditmas, a series of concerts presented from the porches of Brooklyn’s famed Victorian-era homes, with the Cortelyou Road Merchants Association • Concerts from Cars, with the North Flatbush BID • Harmonicas in Solidarity, with NYU Faculty Housing • And the world premiere of “For Love and Only for Love: Letters to New York,” a site-specific, immersive choral installation commissioned from London-based composer Peter Wyerpresented in partnership with The New York Botanical Garden.
