Sarah Vaughan Centennial Featuring Charenée Wade

Sarah Vaughan Centennial Featuring Charenée Wade

JAZZMOBILE Presents:

Sarah Vaughan Centennial
Featuring Charenée Wade

Celebrating the 100th birthday of legendary jazz singer Sarah Vaughan with acclaimed vocalist Charenée Wade and her Septet.

“Sarah Vaughan was the first vocalist that attracted me to Jazz at an early age. Her warm and rich tone was mesmerizing, her storytelling, improvisation, playful expressiveness, and her “swanging” soulfulness set a new standard for artists all around the world. She is the epitome of a great jazz musician and all generations of artists should listen and can learn from her recordings and expansive body of work. They called her Sassy, but she is truly the Divine One.”

-Charenee Wade

Known for expert vocal improvisational ability and her seriously swinging groove, Brooklyn native Charenée Wade evokes a classic jazz sound akin to Betty Carter and Sarah Vaughan, two of her musical touchstones. With her Motéma debut, Offering: The Music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson, she pays tribute to another inspiration, the socially conscious poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron, and confirms that she too plans to use her artist platform thoughtfully. The first full-length album tribute to Scott-Heron and his musical collaborator Brian Jackson by a woman artist, Offering is arresting in just how timely Scott-Heron’s messages are today and how perfectly Wade delivers them through her savvy arrangements and intimate jazz interpretations.

While she has earned many accolades – first runner-up in New York’s Jazzmobile Vocal competition; a participant in Betty Carter’s Jazz Ahead program; a feature on NPR’s Song Travels; a starring role in the off-Broadway show Café Society and in Jazz at Lincoln Center’s Salute to Betty Carter – she may surprise people with this authentic tour de force. Wade gives ample evidence on this remarkable debut as to why she is one of the most exciting, distinctive and bold young musical talents on the rise today. Wade has performed with Bobby Sanabria, Aaron Diehl, Oran Etkin, Robert Glasper and MacArthur Fellow and choreographer Kyle Abraham, among others, and at venues and festivals worldwide including Montreux and Spoleto. A singer, composer, arranger and educator, Wade teaches at Juilliard Jazz, is also a professor at the Aaron Copland School at Queens College; in 2017 Wade received the Jazz At Lincoln Center Millennial Swing Award, and was just recently appointed to Peabody Institute.

Mozart's Requiem

Make Music New York is pleased to announce the return of Mozart’s Requiem!

In past years, these performances of Mozart’s Requiem, organized by conductor Douglas Anderson and producer Melissa Gerstein, have proven both popular and profoundly moving. This season, they invite singers and instrumentalists from across New York City and beyond to celebrate the Summer Solstice and remember lost loved ones by performing Mozart’s profound and solemn work, the Requiem, K626, at a new location: 601 Lexington Avenue at 53rd Street (NE corner).

From Maestro Anderson: “We will gather again this year as part of the Make Music New York annual festival to perform and present this great piece of music with its original intention: to honor loved ones who have passed.  Participating in this event, and performing simultaneously with this group of like-minded performers, provides a much-needed lift to the spirits of all engaged in the endeavor.  An hour of your time spent in the solemn exercise on your part in performing this exceptional piece of music will be a lasting tribute to the family, friends, acquaintances, and fellow citizens we have all lost.  We, the world, and history will know that we performed in their memory.”

The performance will begin at 7:00 pm sharp on June 21 with an introduction and notes from Douglas Anderson and will conclude at approximately 8:15 pm.

Make Music at Diversity Plaza

Make Music is proud to present the RECAP Quartet and Eclectic Charango Beats from Diversity Plaza on Make Music Day!

This program is a part of Make Music New York’s “Plaza by Plaza” series, sponsored by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT). It is also made possible by the Office of Council Member Shekar Krishnan, District 25.

RECAP Quartet (6-7pm)

The RECAP Quartet is a program of Mantra Percussion, Inc. a future-focused, BIPOC-led organization committed to a lasting influence on percussion music and the classical music landscape. Our organization develops communities through collaboration and support, mentors new generations of diverse artists to reshape the classical music paradigm, and engages audiences through immersive, evening-length events that challenge the traditional classical music experience. We work toward this purposeful art-making process using an ethical, equitable framework, amplifying diverse voices — particularly from historically excluded communities. In doing so, we aim to build a future where our community can thrive, connecting more parts of society through determined artistic expression.

RECAP will present numerous pieces commissioned for the ensemble, exploring percussive music through pots, pans, glasses, flutes, marimbas, bells, and other found-sound instruments.

Eclectic Charango Beats (7:30-8:30pm)

The Eclectic Charango Beats Hybrid Set is the result of a collaboration between the Brooklyn-based band and Colombian Producer Pernett. This set was created to give the band’s music an electronic, vibrating and tripping touch, never missing the Andean and Latin-American elements on which the collective built their music over. Synthesizers, Charango and Colombian percussion over electronic deep beats it’s what you will find in this cosmic trip from the Andes mountains to the heart of Brooklyn.

Eclectic Charango Beats was originally conceived as a 7-piece band, but in this clever reduction, producers Sebastian Gonzalez and Pernett (who knew each other closing the 90’s in the Conservatory of Music in Colombia) got together to twist the plot, delivering an energetic and rhythmic, yet melodic set, made for the ear and feet of music lovers in general.

Join us on The Summer Solstice for a grand kalimba/mbira "healing sound" gathering in Union Square hosted by kalimba/mbira master Kevin Nathaniel.

Bring your kalimba or mbira! We will meet at 6pm at the Abraham Lincoln sculpture in Union Square. From there we will set up a sonic kalimba healing sound atrium at the large LOV sculpture by artist Pasha. We will be jamming mostly in C major, but also in F major, so please bring any kind of kalimba or mbira that will match the tuning. And although we will play a song or two from the Zimbabwean kalimba/mbira healing music legacy, please also bring an open mind and heart to allow the music to take its own shape and be spontaneous like NYC.

This is a rare, if not a first major NYC gathering and jam of kalimbas of all styles in a global, sound healing, pan-kalimba, pan-Africa spirit, and where else but in NYC and when else but on Make Music New York Day. Let’s broadcast the healing kalimba sound all throughout the area and to distant planets.

Kevin Nathaniel is an internationally celebrated kalimba/mbira master. He was “called” to music by the magical sound of the mbira immediately and mysteriously after graduating “Scholar of the House” at Yale University. He then worked closely with legendary Zimbabwean mbira master Ephat Mujuru for many years. Kevin continues the mbira/kalimba legacy, creatively working to expand upon it. He has worked with a great variety of artists including Alice Walker, Oprah Winfrey, Jonathan Demme, Thomas Mapfumo, Miriam Makeba, Bobby McFerrin, Niles Rodgers, Madonna, Philip Glass, Nana Vasconcelos, and many more. Kevin keeps has an ongoing healing music series at Modo Yoga, and an ongoing mbira healing practice playing live for people daily in Union Sq NYC. His music is available on all streaming platforms.
