Make Music at Diversity Plaza

  • Diversity Plaza 73-19 37th Road Queens, NY, 11372 United States (map)

Make Music is proud to present the RECAP Quartet and Eclectic Charango Beats from Diversity Plaza on Make Music Day!

This program is a part of Make Music New York’s “Plaza by Plaza” series, sponsored by the NYC Department of Transportation (DOT). It is also made possible by the Office of Council Member Shekar Krishnan, District 25.

RECAP Quartet (6-7pm)

The RECAP Quartet is a program of Mantra Percussion, Inc. a future-focused, BIPOC-led organization committed to a lasting influence on percussion music and the classical music landscape. Our organization develops communities through collaboration and support, mentors new generations of diverse artists to reshape the classical music paradigm, and engages audiences through immersive, evening-length events that challenge the traditional classical music experience. We work toward this purposeful art-making process using an ethical, equitable framework, amplifying diverse voices — particularly from historically excluded communities. In doing so, we aim to build a future where our community can thrive, connecting more parts of society through determined artistic expression.

RECAP will present numerous pieces commissioned for the ensemble, exploring percussive music through pots, pans, glasses, flutes, marimbas, bells, and other found-sound instruments.

Eclectic Charango Beats (7:30-8:30pm)

The Eclectic Charango Beats Hybrid Set is the result of a collaboration between the Brooklyn-based band and Colombian Producer Pernett. This set was created to give the band’s music an electronic, vibrating and tripping touch, never missing the Andean and Latin-American elements on which the collective built their music over. Synthesizers, Charango and Colombian percussion over electronic deep beats it’s what you will find in this cosmic trip from the Andes mountains to the heart of Brooklyn.

Eclectic Charango Beats was originally conceived as a 7-piece band, but in this clever reduction, producers Sebastian Gonzalez and Pernett (who knew each other closing the 90’s in the Conservatory of Music in Colombia) got together to twist the plot, delivering an energetic and rhythmic, yet melodic set, made for the ear and feet of music lovers in general.
