Roomful of Pianos: Mixed Nuts

Calling all pianists, of all ages!

Celebrate the season with a very special version of Make Music’s signature series Roomful of Pianos: “23 Mixed Nuts.” The program will present an adapted version of Tchaikovsky’s timeless holiday classic, The Nutcracker Suite, to be performed simultaneously on multiple pianos (up to ten at a time!) The program will be led by conductor Zane Myers and the festivities will include a visit from the dynamic Duo Mundi and surprise guests.

If you’re interested in playing, make sure to register below! Our younger pianists should register with a partner in a pre-formed and rehearsed duo. Single adult pianists in need of a partner should indicate which part (Primo or Secondo) they will be playing when they register for their specific piece. We are also in need of Volunteer coach-helpers for both evenings!

Performers must attend rehearsal on Monday, December 18th at 7 pm, as well as the concert on December 21st. Call-time on December 21st is 6m.

You will find scores to the music below, including:

Bell by Bell

Join us to (literally) ring in the winter season!

“Bell by Bell” is a fun Make Music Winter tradition designed to transform first time participants and non-musicians into Music Makers, and is the perfect program for kids and families. Reserve your hand bell and your spot in this popular program by filling out the form below:

Meet us at Astor Place Plaza at 5:45pm, at the crossroad of the East and West Villages, where we will distribute to revelers color-coded bells that play different notes and give an introductory crash course in hand bell playing basics. Then, our team of conductors will wave matching color-coded flags, prompting you and your fellow participants to collectively contribute to commissioned hand bell compositions that intensify as the group learns to play together.

We are proud to announce that this season features the world premiere of a new hand bell score, Gradient by Nat Evans. Gradient is part of a series of pieces relating to coyotes —meditations on their adaptations and perseverance in natural settings, but in urban settings like New York too. Their inherent trickster nature mirrors the chaotic, nonlinear nature of our own consciousness - at times mundane, and at other times wild - and this piece shares elements of both sides of that coin.

Nat Evans is an artist and composer based in Seattle and Philadelphia. His interdisciplinary work focuses on ecology and meditations on everyday life, and is regularly presented across the United States and internationally.

Bell by Bell is co-presented with the Village Alliance, the neighborhood’s Business Improvement District. The Village Alliance works for the people and places of the Village to support community and business vitality.

Fogo Azul: Solstice Sonic Spectacle

NYC’s all-women Brazilian Samba Reggae drum line, Fogo Azul (Blue Fire), was born at the intersection of founder Stacy Kovacs’ passion for Samba Reggae, her deep respect for its cultural roots as a music of protest and resistance, her belief and activism in support of gender equality and her sense of civic duty in the current environment to publicly awaken and inspire people to resist oppression and exercise their power to uplift society — loudly.  Launched in 2016 as an extension of Marcus Santos’s Samba Reggae-based Grooversity education project, Fogo Azul NYC is an age and ethnically diverse community who spans the drummer spectrum from novice to professional.

Gaits: A High Line Soundwalk

“Gaits” is an immersive, site-specific music procession featuring commissioned compositions by Lainie Fefferman, Jascha Narveson, Dan Iglesia, and Cameron Britt in which the wonders of our everyday technology transform participants’ movements into musical Improvisations. Paraders use a free app that captures the GPS coordinates and velocities of their movements to trigger a variety of twinkling metallic sounds, electric guitar chords, dulcimer notes, water splashes, car horns and applause – empowering marchers to effortlessly make music while interacting with their environment and each other.

The “Gaits” app has been newly updated to include the entire length of the High Line from Gansevoort Plaza to Coach Plaza at West 30th and 10th Avenue. Download the iPhone app HERE.

Presented by Make Music New York and hosted by Friends of the High Line.

WHEN AND WHERE:

Participants will arrive between 5:30-6pm at the southern end of The High Line, at the base of the Gansevoort Stairs,  Gansevoort and Washington Streets. Participants will be spaced out in groups of 5-10 every 3 minutes. Elevator access is available to the left of the main entryway stairs. The procession will walk north along the elevated park.

The Gaits App is currently only available to iPhone users. Please download the app prior to arrival, at this link.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM COMPOSERS:

Lainie Fefferman makes music by putting dots on lines, drawing curves in software, writing code in boxes, and finding new and surprising ways to wiggle her vocal chords. Her most recent commissions for the creation of original works have been from Recap Quartet, Greg Oakes, JACK Quartet, Aaron Larget-Caplan, Ensemble Decipher, Tenth Intervention, So Percussion, Make Music New York, Experiments in Opera, ETHEL, Kathleen Supové, TILT Brass, James Moore, Eleonore Oppenheim, and Dither. Her one-woman voice & electronics feminist song project "White Fire," an electroacoustic meditation on the heroines of the Hebrew Bible, was released as an album on Gold Bolus Recordings in 2023. She is a co-founder and director of New Music Gathering, an annual conference/festival hybrid event for the international New Music Community. She had a wonderful time getting her doctorate in composition from Princeton University and is a programming/performing member of Princeton-based laptop ensemble Sideband. She currently teaches and advises a fabulous bunch of music makers as a professor of Music & Technology at Stevens Institute of Technology and recently concluded her time as artist in residence at Nokia Bell Labs.

Dan Iglesia is a composer and technologist whose ensembles include Sideband, Spirograph Agnew, and Datalore. His works have been performed by ICE, So Percussion, Yarn/Wire, Talujon, and many more. His A/V work has been at the World Expo, the Hirshhorn Museum, the Kitchen, etc. He is the author of the MobMuPlat app. His work for ensemble and 3D video is featured in the upcoming "3-D Experimental VR and Art Practices" (U Chicago Press). He lives in California and works for YouTube.

Jascha Narveson was raised in a concert hall and put to sleep as a child with an old vinyl copy of the Bell Labs mainframe computer singing "Bicycle Built for Two." He now makes music for people, machines, and interesting combinations of people and machines.

This program is presented by Make Music New York and hosted by Friends of the High Line.

The High Line is both a nonprofit organization and a public park on the West Side of Manhattan. Through our work with communities on and off the High Line, we’re devoted to reimagining the role public spaces have in creating connected, healthy neighborhoods and cities.

Built on a historic, elevated rail line, the High Line was always intended to be more than a park. You can walk through gardens, view art, experience a performance, savor delicious food, or connect with friends and neighbors-all while enjoying a unique perspective of New York City.

Tilted Axes: The Longest Night

Tilted Axes: Music for Mobile Electric Guitars is an orchestra of guitarists and percussionists led by composer and performer Patrick Grant since its premiere on the winter solstice 2011. Flexible in number, the musicians perform original music untethered via portable mini-amps strapped over their shoulders. The project takes on aspects of spectacle informed by urban street band tradition, avant-garde theater, and ancient music. It takes music out into the world and seeks transformative situations meant to change the community conversation. Since its inception, the project has performed at music, film, and theater festivals in the USA, Europe, and Brazil.

Patrick Grant is a composer, performer, and producer living in New York City and creates audio for a wide range media and live performance. A native of Detroit, MI, he moved to NYC where he studied at the Juilliard School, worked on the production team for composer John Cage, and produced his first recordings in the studios of Philip Glass. For the stage he has created scores for theatrical visionaries The Living Theatre, Robert Wilson, and produced opening night spectacles for Obama portraitist Kehinde Wiley. Interest in world music brought him to Bali three times to study the gamelan which manifested itself in his work through the use of alternative tunings, ensembles with multiple keyboards, as Composer-in-Residence at Cornell University, and in his work with Robert Fripp & The Orchestra of Crafty Guitarists. He is the creator of International Strange Music Day (August 24) since 1998 and the mobile electric guitar procession (Tilted Axes) since 2011. He is a 2021 and 2023 recipient of a Composer Commissions Award from the New York State Council on the Arts (NYSCA), a two-time recipient (2020 & 2021) of a Creative Engagement Award from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, and a multiple nominee of the Detroit Music Awards (2017-2019). He is a Post Production professor at NYU Tisch School of the Arts Film & TV and helps produce the “How To Be A Better Human” podcast for TED & PRX.

Flatfoot Flatbush

Flatfoot Flatbush, Brooklyn’s first-ever flatfooting parade, turns 10!

For the tenth year in December 2023, the North Flatbush Avenue Business Improvement District (BID) teams up with Make Music New York and Porch Stomp to bring you another exciting year of music and dancing to celebrate community and the winter solstice.

During Flatfoot Flatbush, dancers, fiddlers and pickers parade down the sidewalks of the ever-busy Flatbush Avenue in Park Slope/ Prospect Heights (Dean Street to Sterling Place) playing old-time tunes while flatfooting, a form of percussive dancing from Appalachia. The evening begins with a warm up and quick flatfooting workshop hosted by Megan Downes (City Stompers), which will take place outdoors at 4pm. Immediately following, the flatfooting parade will kick off and traverse Flatbush Avenue stopping along the way at local businesses to bring holiday cheer (starting location and route to be shared in weeks to come) The parade will finish at the 6th Avenue Triangle (intersection of Flatbush, 6th, and St Marks Avenues), with a special performance from the Gowanus Wildcats, and participatory group dances lead by Brooklyn Contra and the City Stompers.

Starting at 6:30pm, the fun continues at an indoor after-party featuring more music and dance, and an open jam lead by the Flatfoot Flatbush Band. The after party doubles as the North Flatbush Avenue BID merchant holiday party, and will bring together businesses in the district to share in holiday cheer.

Guitar, mandolin, fiddle, banjo players and other stringed instrumentalists are encouraged to join the Flatfoot Flatbush String Band! To join, just email mmnyporchstomp@gmail.com no later than December 18th to obtain music scores and detailed instructions. Dancers and boosters are welcome to simply stroll on up!

Are you a dancer, instructor or troupe leader that represents a different style of rhythmic dance? If so, consider complementing our flatfooters with a performance of your own — from soulstepping to Irish jigs to square dancing — by contacting the parade organizers at mmnyporchstomp@gmail.com.
